A course going around the Onga River Pumping Station which became a World Heritage Site in the summer of 2015. In full operation from 1910 to the present, the stylish red brick Pumping Station is definitely worth taking a look at. The course passes through a nature-filled bamboo grove and along the Onga Horikawa Canal a river made under the orders of Kuroda Nagamasa, the feudal lord of the Kuroda domain. We encourage you to experience the history of the ancestors involved with the Horikawa Canal and the Pump House.

1. Nakama City Hall

Across the road you can see a monument to Nakappa, a water sprite and the welcome sign. Right in front of you is the Onga River, a majestic class A river.

2. Road along Horikawa Canal

A man-made canal of the Fukuoka domain, opened in 1762. From the Meiji to Taisho periods, it was bustling with riverboats transporting coal.

3. Horikawa-no-Nakama Karato

A sluice built in 1762. It draws water from the Onga River and adjusts water volume using varying numbers of sluice plates. The rooftop used to store the sluice plates creates a striking site.

4. Road Along Sasaogawa River

There is the Iron Pipe Bridge sporting a water blue color. It stretches as far as the Yawata Steelworks facing Dokai Bay.

5. World Heritage Site
